TBLC Certifications
Knowledge of the Fundamentals of TBL
What is it?: The Knowledge of the Fundamentals of TBL Certificate is awarded to those who attend five (5) workshops delivered by a TBLC-Certified TBL Trainer-Consultant, Certified TBL Practitioner, or Candidate for either certification who is supervised by a Certified TBL Trainer-Consultant. The five workshops and their learning objectives are:

How do I complete the certificate requirements?: The certificate is based on documentation of participation in workshops. The TBLC offers these as a recurring workshop series. Check out our upcoming workshops.

What is the pathway to the certificate?​
Step 1: Attend the 5 fundamentals workshops

The TBLC-sponsored TBL Fundamentals Workshop Series includes all 5 required workshops!

You can also attend workshops that are offered by TBLC Certified TBL Trainer-Consultants.

Step 2a: If you attend a TBLC-sponsored workshop series – your certificate will be sent to you automatically!
Step 2b: If you attend workshops not sponsored by the TBLC, apply for the Knowledge of the Fundamentals of TBL Certificate. How much does it cost? For those who participate in a TBLC-sponsored series of the workshops, the certificate fee is included in the registration. For those who participate in these workshops not sponsored by the TBLC, the certificate is $25 (USD) and must be applied for directly through the TBLC, unless otherwise noted by the workshop organizers.
TBL Module Design Series Certification (TBL MDS)
What is it? The TBL Module Design Series Certificate is designed to bridge the gap between the Fundamentals of TBL and the TBL Practitioner Certification. This is ideal for educators who have completed the Fundamentals and would like additional support in converting an existing course, developing a new course into a TBL format or review of an existing TBL course/module. This series consists of four (4) workshops delivered by TBLC Certified Trainer-Consultants or TBLC Certified Practitioners. The four workshops and their learning outcomes are:

Crafting Learning Outcomes

Identify different levels of learner outcomes through review of Module 1 Pre-work Video

Describe the purpose and value of backward design through team discussion.

Discuss the broad level learner outcomes for participants’ module/course through team discussion
-
Following the workshop, Craft appropriate Learner Outcomes (LOs) using ABCD (E) model and aligned with goals of course/module using backward design and input in Participant Worksheet.

Crafting TBL Application Questions

identify the critical purpose and value of 4S’s in TBL Activities through review Module 2 video.

Debate the different types of applications they are using – MCQ, Short Answer, Gallery Walk through team discussion.

Discuss the difference between RAT and Application through team discussion.

Following the workshop, map their course/session LO’s and Applications and input in the Participant worksheet.

Crafting TBL Readiness Assurance Questions

Describe the best practices for crafting a single best answer MCQ for Readiness Assurance Tests through team discussion.

Define the primary purpose of the Readiness Assurance Test through team discussion.

Crafting Facilitator Guide

Describe the best practices for crafting facilitator guide that clearly outlines LO’s, RATs, Applications, following TBL framework through team discussion.

Describe the TBLC certification process and how this workshop series provides guidance in starting the Practitioner Certificate

Following the workshop, draft a facilitator guide in such a way that another could replicate, understanding the administration and key facilitation strategies of the activities and consider applying for Practitioner Certificate

What is the pathway to the certificate? Step 1: Have received TBLC Certificate for Knowledge of the Fundamentals of TBL, either through TBLC or an approved program conducted by a Certified Trainer/Consultant. Step 2: Attend and actively participate in the 4 TBL Module Design Series workshops.

How much does it cost?​

The pilot series starting February 2026 will be $350.

After the pilot series, the fees for TBL members the TBL MDS fee is $700, for non-TBL members at time of registration $840. Trainees or Student's fee is $350.

The fee includes a free one-year membership for non-members and an extension of 1 year membership for existing TBL members.
TBL Practitioner Certification
What is it? The TBL Practitioner Certification is designed for those who are skilled in the development of TBL modules and experienced in facilitation using TBL. This is the ideal certification for educators, instructors, and trainers who are currently using TBL in their teaching/training! It is expected that TBL Practitioners have knowledge of the fundamentals of TBL, developed a complete TBL module, implemented a peer evaluation process, and documented evaluation of your TBL modules and facilitation skills.

How do I achieve certification?: TBL Practitioners demonstrate competency in four domains:
Knowledge of TBL
Design and delivery of a complete module of TBL-based instruction
Implementation and evaluation of a peer evaluation process
Effective facilitation skills
TBL Practitioners submit a portfolio of evidence that documents experience, competency, and capacity to reflect upon professional development in a meaningful way. Certification is based on evaluation of the portfolio by the TBLC Training and Certification Committee. Review the evaluation criteria.

Step 3: Compile evidence that demonstrates achievement of each of the key competencies. This is your portfolio!

Step 4: Submit your portfolio for peer review by other certified TBL Practitioners and Trainer-Consultants.

How much does it cost? The total cost of the TBL Practitioner Certification Program is $350 (USD).
TBL Trainer-Consultant Certification
What is it? The TBL Trainer-Consultant Certification is designed for members of the TBLC who have achieved the TBL Practitioner Certification and are now ready to actively mentor others to develop their own TBL modules. This is the ideal certification for educators, instructors, and trainers who mentor others in the effective use of TBL! It is expected that TBL Trainer-Consultants will have coordinated and facilitated introductory workshops in TBL and will have mentored others in the development of a complete TBL module.

How do I achieve certification?: TBL Trainer-Consultants demonstrate competency in six domains. The first four domains are part of the TBL Practitioner Certification Program:
Knowledge of TBL
Design and delivery of a complete module of TBL-based instruction
Implementation and evaluation of a peer evaluation process
Effective facilitation skills
Design and delivery of workshops for training others to use TBL
Effective mentoring of other educators in the application of TBL
TBL Trainer-Consultants submit a portfolio of evidence that documents experience, competency, and capacity to reflect upon professional development in a meaningful way.
