Knowledge of the Fundamentals of TBL

What is it?: The Knowledge of the Fundamentals of TBL Certificate is awarded to those who attend five (5) workshops delivered by a TBLC-Certified TBL Trainer-Consultant, Certified TBL Practitioner, or Candidate for either certification who is supervised by a Certified TBL Trainer-Consultant. The five workshops and their learning objectives are:

  1. Fundamental Principles and Practices of TBL
    • Describe the essential elements of TBL
    • Explain clearly and concisely how and why TBL works
    • Evaluate the benefits of using TBL
  2. Evaluating Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) for Readiness Assurance Tests (RATs) and Application Activities
    • Compare and contrast MCQs for RATs, exams and applications
    • Link MCQs to session learning outcomes
    • Identify common errors and barriers to writing effective MCQ questions
  3. Peer Evaluation and Team Development
    • Identify characteristics of high and low performing teams
    • Compare and contrast systems and strategies for facilitating team growth
    • Apply strategies to empower teams to self-manage performance through peer feedback and evaluation
    • Identify common errors and barriers to successful teamwork and peer evaluation
  4. Improving Facilitation Skills for TBL
    • Justify the importance of learner motivation, participation and a positive learning environment
    • Compare and contrast facilitation roles and methods
    • Analyze the key characteristics of effective facilitators
    • Identify common errors and barriers to successful TBL facilitation
  5. Creating an Effective TBL Module
    • Apply backward design methodology to plan a TBL module
    • Construct application exercises that adhere to the 4S framework
    • Design readiness materials that motivate self-directed learning
    • Convert non-TBL course material into TBL format
    • Identify common errors and barriers during TBL module development

How do I complete the certificate requirements?: The certificate is based on documentation of participation in workshops. The TBLC offers these as a recurring workshop series. Check out our upcoming available dates.

What is the pathway to the certificate? 

Step 1: Attend the 5 fundamentals workshops

Step 2a: If you attend a TBLC-sponsored workshop series – your certificate will be sent to you automatically!
Step 2b: If you attend workshops not sponsored by the TBLC, apply for the Knowledge of the Fundamentals of TBL Certificate.

How much does it cost? For those who participate in a TBLC-sponsored series of the workshops, the certificate fee is included in the registration. For those who participate in these workshops not sponsored by the TBLC, the certificate is $25 (USD) and must be applied for directly through the TBLC, unless otherwise noted by the workshop organizers.

TBL Practitioner Certification

What is it?: The TBL Practitioner Certification is designed for those who are skilled in the development of TBL modules and experienced in facilitation using TBL. This is the ideal certification for educators, instructors, and trainers who are currently using TBL in their teaching/training! It is expected that TBL Practitioners have knowledge of the fundamentals of TBL, developed a complete TBL module, implemented a peer evaluation process, and documented evaluation of your TBL modules and facilitation skills.

How do I achieve certification?: TBL Practitioners demonstrate competency in four domains:

  1. Knowledge of TBL
  2. Design and delivery of a complete module of TBL-based instruction
  3. Implementation and evaluation of a peer evaluation process
  4. Effective facilitation skills

TBL Practitioners submit a portfolio of evidence that documents experience, competency, and capacity to reflect upon professional development in a meaningful way. Certification is based on evaluation of the portfolio by the TBLC Training and Certification Committee. Review the evaluation criteria.

What is the pathway to certification? 

Step 1: Apply for the TBL Practitioner Certification Program.
Step 2: Engage with your assigned mentor and the TBL Practitioner Certification Mentoring Community.
Step 3: Compile evidence that demonstrates achievement of each of the key competencies. This is your portfolio!
Step 4: Submit your portfolio for peer review by other certified TBL Practitioners and Trainer-Consultants.

How much does it cost? The total cost of the TBL Practitioner Certification Program is $350 (USD). $175 (USD) is due with initial application and $175 (USD) is due with portfolio submission.

TBL Trainer-Consultant Certification

What is it?: The TBL Trainer-Consultant Certification is designed for members of the TBLC who have achieved the TBL Practitioner Certification and are now ready to actively mentor others to develop their own TBL modules. This is the ideal certification for educators, instructors, and trainers who mentor others in the effective use of TBL! It is expected that TBL Trainer-Consultants will have coordinated and facilitated introductory workshops in TBL and will have mentored others in the development of a complete TBL module.

How do I achieve certification?: TBL Trainer-Consultants demonstrate competency in six domains. The first four domains are part of the TBL Practitioner Certification Program:

  1. Knowledge of TBL
  2. Design and delivery of a complete module of TBL-based instruction
  3. Implementation and evaluation of a peer evaluation process
  4. Effective facilitation skills
  5. Design and delivery of workshops for training others to use TBL
  6. Effective mentoring of other educators in the application of TBL

TBL Trainer-Consultants submit a portfolio of evidence that documents experience, competency, and capacity to reflect upon professional development in a meaningful way. Certification is based on evaluation of the portfolio by the TBLC Training and Certification Committee. Review the evaluation criteria.
