Prior to her current post in education, Jenny had post-doctoral research positions in health services research at the MRC Centre for Environmental Epidemiology at Southampton University (1987-1988), and the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York (1988-1994) in England; and the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Otago in New Zealand (1994-1997).
Jenny took up her current academic post in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Plymouth University, England in 1998 and has been responsible for the development and organisation of research-based modules in pre-registration and postgraduate health care programmes. With increasing student numbers and difficulties in getting students to engage with research-based subjects, Jenny has explored several teaching and learning strategies. Exposure as a participant in a team-based learning session at a course at Oxford University in England in September 2011 led Jenny and her teaching team to first implement TBL in a second year course of 257 pre-registration nurses in 2012. This first implementation was successful in that we saw significant differences in how students engaged with the subject, and also improved results. We continue to use TBL and with our increase in student numbers are now working with around 550 students and a teaching team of 10!
