Session Information: In this webinar, we describe how we introduced TBL in the first year of the Bachelor’s programme at of the Academic Centre for Dentistry in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Last year team-based learning (TBL) was decided upon as the main teaching method and was implemented in the first year of the Bachelor’s programme in September 2020. More than with traditional teaching methods, TBL stimulates students to participate actively in their own learning process. This team-oriented method prepares future dentists for academic reasoning and clinical decision-making.

Session Information: In recent times, as teachers, we’ve been creating assessments mainly with multiple-choice questions -or single-best-answers (SBA). However, SBA questions can give a false impression of students’ competence while Very Short Answers (VSAs) questions have greater authenticity and can provide useful information regarding students’ cognitive errors, helping to improve learning as well as assessment.

In next month’s free TBLC webinar, presenter Amanda Emke from Washington University School of Medicine will discuss assessing professional behaviors in pre-clerkship medical students in a team setting. Preclinical physician training often focuses on individual knowledge acquisition as students work individually and indirectly with faculty assessors. Therefore, the assessment of professionalism in preclinical training allowing for longitudinal assessment and early recognition of at-risk behaviors continues to present challenges. Team-Based Learning (TBL), with peer interactions at its instructional core, provides unique opportunities for direct observation of professional behaviors. Dr. Emke and her team developed a novel assessment strategy using paired self- and peer-assessments of professional behaviors observed during TBL sessions.

In our third free webinar this year, presenters Ruth Levine, Dawnelle Schatte and Lindsey Persher discussed their experiences with creating a common curriculum through collaboration with multiple institutions. They presented their findings regarding the impact of Team-Based Learning as pedagogy, as well as the challenges and gains of collaborating with faculty from other institutions.

Please join us in the first of a series in free webinars sponsored by the Team-Based Learning Collaborative, focusing on generating research ideas with an aim at getting that scholarly work published. Many who are teaching-focused would like to (or need to) publish papers, but may not have access to research data in a particular discipline. This TBLC Research and Scholarship webinar is the first in a series that features a wide range of research that members have published.

This inaugural webinar deals with what is possibly the hardest step in the research process, which is to find a workable research idea that draws on our classroom activities. This poses a challenge, because for most of us teaching/education is an unfamiliar discipline, and it may be hard to see how we can draw on our own “technical” discipline research experience for guidance.

Dr. Balan’s field of expertise is entrepreneurship and innovation, but he has built a research stream in education/pedagogy and has set up collaborative research projects with TBLC members in different countries. His view is that every time we walk into a classroom we should see the students in front of us as a potential dataset and that there are many possible research ideas that emerge out of our teaching, and out of reflecting on student attitudes and perceptions in general.
Dr. Balan will talk through a practical approach for generating research ideas, and will use some of his current projects to bring to life the first steps in the research process, which is to identify a research idea and then to turn this into a research question that can be explored using data provided by your students.
