TBLC – Call for Best Paper Award Nominations – Due 10/15

The Team-Based Learning Collaborative (TBLC) wishes to recognize excellence and innovation in advancing Team-Based Learning (TBL) through research and scholarly publications, and therefore announces the 2018 Best Paper Awards. TBLC will award two awards in the following categories:

  • Best Scholarship paper (systematic, literature or integrative review; theoretical framework; methodological; or discussion)
  • Best Research paper (primary research assessing TBL components, processes or outcomes, or establishing best practices; quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods)

Articles nominated for this award must have been published in a peer reviewed journal in the last two calendar years (2015 or 2016), be consistent with the entire TBL process, and align with the mission of the TBLC. At least one author must be a member of the TBLC and one author must be registered to attend the 2018 TBLC meeting to accept the award.

Nominations are to be submitted to Danielle Inscoe (danielle@tblcadmin.org) via email by October 15, 2017. You can download the instructions for nominations here.

TBLC – New Modules in the Module Bank

The Team-Based Learning Collaborative resource bank has been updated with two new TBL teaching modules! When you log into the Member Only section of the TBLC website, click on the Resource Bank to view the TBL modules available and to access these new modules. TBLC – Would you like to have a TBL Consultant Conduct a Workshop?

As you may know, the TBLC maintains a list of certified Trainer-Consultants on the TBLC website under the “Resources” tab. If you would like to have one of our Trainer-Consultants lead a workshop at your university and help spread TBL, let us know!

Please email us at support@tblcadmin.org with the following information:

  • Institution
  • Type of workshop requested
  • Approximate number of participants
  • Date you’d like the workshop to be held

Once we have this information, we will be able to help assist in finding the proper Trainer-Consultant to lead this workshop!

TBLC – Featured Module: The Manager’s Job

This month’s featured module is The Manager’s Job. The Module was developed by Dr. Mark Harrison, reviewed, and published to the Resource Bank in the Winter of 2017. The Manager’s Job module was designed for a course in Management at a liberal arts college. The primary focus is on critical thinking and communication skills, which have priority over technical knowledge and skills. The course serves as part of a broader effort to do Writing Across the Curriculum. This module is traditionally taught in small sections of 15 – 20 students of traditional age. These students have negligible prior exposure to Management, but they have read Harrison (2012) Note on Decision Cases Situation Analysis.

The Module focuses on three learning goals. The Learning Goals are:

  • Think critically and analytically; communicate clearly (both orally and in writing)
  • Apply managerial theories to realistic business situations; specifically, to apply Mintzberg’s ‘ten roles of a manager’ to the situation of Jessica Gonon in the case “Mommy-Track Backlash”.
  • Perform a situation analysis on a realistic management situation and make a reasoned recommendation for a course of action.

The Manager’s Job module includes a nine question RAT and two Application Exercises.
